Vocier nominated for German Design Award 2016

In 2015, Austria-based Vocier was awarded the iF Design Award 2015 for their handy designer suitcase „C38“. More than 26 countries participated in the competition that selects only the best design products in the five categories: Product Packaging, Communication, Interior Architecture and Professional Concept. Moreover, the luggage startup Vocier is nominated for the German Design Award 2016, an international prize oft he German Design Council.

90% of accent startups still active

A survey about the Austrian startup ecosystem showed that 90% of the startups supported by accent are still active. „With our support, the companies were able to secure more than 280,000 euros of public money and 120,000 euros from investors,“ Michael Moll, CEO of accent, explains their sucess. Accent is a high-tech founder centre for businesses in Lower Austria and has supported projects such as talentify or fresnex in the past.

Beyondarts receives award for best „Native Mobile App“

The Austrian art-guide beyondarts has won at the Constantinus Awards 2015. Their recent project „App-Guide Stift Klosterneuburg“ was nominated in two categories and received the first prize for „Native Mobile Apps“ at the ceremony in Vorarlberg. „The Constantinus Award is like the Oscar of the IT sector,“ the team describes their victory on their blog. Currently, the startup is also nominated for the UNO World Summit Award 2015.

VisoCon launches Video-tool for XING

Graz-based Visocon developed a new videomeeting and webinar system called EyesOnXing. User can download the app, log in with their XING account and start scheduling meetings online. While the service including video calls, chats and presentations is free of charge, there will be a premium model introduced in the following months. VisoCon is a high-tech startup developing interactive communication solutions and is supported by tecnet and aws.

First investment of Macedonian business angels goes to WeLrn

What started as a pitching contest in front of CEED Macedonia in November 2014, lead to WeLrn's first investment. The team secured money from Macedonian business angels which will help them to further develop their platform, which is expected for launch in mid October this year. The idea for WeLrn was born at the third Startup Weekend Skopje and developed into an online marketplace for teaching and learning real-world skills through short video courses. Their interactive platform is built to encourage social learning and create a highly engaging environment with the use of gamification. The main focus will be improving practical skills through 20 minute online courses held by experts.

Gatherer gets two prizes at Entrepreneurship Avenue

At Austria’s biggest pitching contest for students the appointment app gatherer went home with not one but two prizes. Already before the final pitch, the startup could secure the Recommendation Award through their outstanding social media activity. Moreover, Desiree Zottl and her team were able to convince the jury and received the second prize at Entrepreneurship Avenue, which qualified them for joining the Pitching Days in Tel Aviv. Bank Austria and wemakeit join forces

With the help of Bank Austria, crowdfunding projects of wemakeit can now receive additional support. In the context of the annual „Kunstpreis“ competition, Bank Austria will provide one third of the funding target for campaigns with an art or culture focus. Overall 110,000 euros will be available to wemakeit projects. Applications can be handed in until 31 July. Find out more about this year’s competition and how to apply here.

rudy games meets Electronic Arts

Manfred Lamplmair, CEO and founder of Austrian startup rudy games, has met with experts from American computer games giant Electronic Arts at the Mobile Game Developer Meetup in Redwood City, California, this April. Rudy games specialises in combining classic board-games with computer and mobile gaming. Their “combined games” caught the interest of EA who are keen competitors for the Number 1-spot in world-wide mobile gaming.

“Listening to EA’s various strategies towards aquisition, engagement and monetization in mobile games was very exciting,” says Lamplmair who in turn got a chance to present rudy-games’ combined-gaming-vision to EA-specialists.

Mobile Game Developer Meetup is a monthly conference where topics are presented and discussed which cover all aspects of Mobile Gaming.


Slovenian Digital Communications Conference Diggit

On 4 June the DIGGIT conference was held in Ljubljana for the third time. The aim of the conference is to continue its mission of knowledge-sharing on current trends in digital communication and business. DIGGIT hosted several experts on social media, digital media, research or marketing. Eleven's last round of investment includes 14 new startups

Venture capital fund Eleven has just selected 14 new startups last funding round for 2015. Eight of the selected startups are Bulgarian, one with a Finnish connection, four are from Serbia and also Montenegro and Croatia got one startup each. Among the selected projects are: a tracking device for autistic children, a shared workspace for chefs, an online platform for organising gamer competitions, headphones measuring stress levels, software for industrial automation, a strategy game base on Balkan mythology, and a Fight Club-type app for martial arts aficionados, minus the whole idea of Fight Club. Eleven’s investment programme ends this year, but there are plans for a new one, which may start in 2016.

SpeedInvest Announces $55M Collaboration

Vienna-based seed fund SpeedInvest used the Pioneers Festival to announce a $55-million collaboration with New Enterprise Associates (NEA), one of the biggest VC funds in the US. “We will not only dream big but we have a partner to make these plans come true now,” Speedinvest’s CEO Olliver Holle said for inventures. NEA will invest $5 million directly into Speedinvest’s newly launched second fund and anticipates reserving another $50 million for follow-on investments in Speedinvest portfolio companies.

Inits provides Open Source services for startups

The Vienna-based incubator INiTS has been announced as official Hub of the European FIWARE Network. The Fiware platfrom was realised in the context of the Future Internet Public-Private Partnership Programme of the European Commission and recently launched its free-of-charge services. There are many ways to make use of Fiware, for example, saving data in a cloud, using real data for first tests, or to realise ideas in the IoT area.

As of now, INiTS startups have access to several Open Source Services that can help young startups to develop their apps faster and cheaper. „Fiware is a great possibiity for your web entrepreneurs and startups. We are happy that we have been chosen as the only partner in Austria from the European Network,“ says Irene Fialka, CEO of INiTS.

Strawberry Energy The Coolest Startup in Cognicity Challenge

Strawberry Energy, that only foreign startup in the UK's Cognicity Challenge three-month-long acceleration programme, has been awarded the Cool Prize for the most interesting startup at the end of the programme. A cherry on top is that their new product for smart cities will be installed in Canary Wharf business quarter in London. Canary Wharf sustainable development director has supported the team and has expressed his belief that Strawberry's technology will be successful in Britain and around the world.

Farmia attended the World Bank Conference in D.C.

Founders of Farmia, a startup that provides digital space for livestock exchange, were invited by the World Bank to attend conference Harnessing Digital Trade for Competitiveness and Development on 19 May. Shoulder to shoulder with Farmia were entrepreneurs from developing countries, policy experts and development specialists. All together the conference discussed ways to break down barriers that prevent entrepreneurs to fully exploit the Internet due to infrastructural limitations or unreliability.

Rapid test for clean water by Viennese startup

The Austrian startup-company Vienna Water Monitoring GmbH has developped a stunningly quick method to check water for e.coli bacteria. What took up to 48 hours, can now be done in just 15 minutes. Thanks to the ColiMinder, developped by VWM, the water does no longer need to be tested in a lab. The ColiMinder is a device only some 30 cm tall and weighs a mere 14 kilos; it comes in various models that can be used in laboratories, as mobile or stationary devices. Currently, two ColiMinders are tested by the Technical University of Vienna in purification plants. Dr. Irene Fialka, general manager of startup incubator INiTS that supported VWM: “Water preparation certainly is a vital and seminal area of business. Offering mobile and quick services is of the essence. That is why we supported VWM in the development as a business-incubator.”

Forty million fund for startups in Western Balkans

The Croatian portal Netokracija published exclusive news of a new startup fund opening in Zagreb, Belgrade and Skopje. Jure Mikuz, director of RSG Capital,  a fund which already invests in a number of startups in Slovenia and Croatia, revealed that the fund is created with investments from ENIF (Enterprise Innovation Fund), partly by the Western Balkan Enterprise Development Innovation Facility and the EU. The Fund will invest the total amount in two ways: (1) 100,000 euros as seed investments in early stage (1.5 million euros available in total) (2) Investments from 1 to 3 million euros for developed projects that can absorb higher amount of capital. The new fund will focus on the Western Balkan countries, including: Albania , Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Kosovo .

Investor Dellbruck supports customer loyalty-app qonnect

Lower Austrian venture Ikangai has announced that they found a new investor for their app qonnect (read our profile here). Vienna-based private equity company Dellbruck has paid a six-figure amount for four percent of the venture, according to Ikangai-boss Martin Treiber. qonnect is an app that connects businesses with their customers, keeping them up-to-date about current events, promotions or vouchers. In addition, it features customer-card management and deeper interaction between customer and seller. More than 50 businesses, among them winemaker Hillinger or the Metropol theatre of Vienna already work with qonnect. The app is available on iOS and Android-devices free of charge.
