The digital paywall soltuion Piano Media announced the purchase of its American competitor Press Plus, a service for media subscriptions. Details of the deal remain undisclosed. While former Wallstreet journal publisher Kelly Leach will lead the new joint company, the founders of Press Plus L. Gordon Crovitz and Stephen Brill plan to stay only for a short period as advisers.
Leach aims to attract more clients from US, Asia and Latin America in the future. At the moment Piano Media provides their paywall service for 27 publishers in New York, Spain, Great Britain, among others.
Belgrade-based FishingBooker began their visit to the United States this September by giving a pitch at one of the world's biggest tech entrepreneurship conferences, TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco. And besides getting a helpful feedback from the experienced jury, they also won the audience choice award of the event. This recognition is of great importance to this company which is bootstrapping its way to the top, but also for the Serbian startup community. The next stop on the FishingBooker team's U.S.A. tour is Florida, where they will attend an event for professional anglers.
Zagreb-based Madbarz secures their first investment. The financial support comes from Hungarian fund Traction Tribe and will help to expand their team. Founder Madbarza Luke Macner states that it took them only 25 days from the first contact to the realisation of the investment. The Croatian fitness startup has been part of ZIP’s Spring 2013 batch and created an app that helps users train with their own weight. For the near future the team plans to offer their mobile and web service on a global level.
Last minute booking application HotelQuickly received a Series A investment of 4.5 million dollars from GREE Ventures. This is already the second investment for the company that attracted 2M in the previous year. HotelQuickly is cofounded by the Slovak Michal Juhas and is currently headquartered in Hong Kong. The team plans to use the freshly secured money to accelerate their growth on the Asia-Pacific market.
The tech accelerator group CEED announced a 5 million euros grant from European Commission to support startups in CEE. As of today, their call for new software businesses that are looking for funding is open. While startups can apply until 15 December here, in 2015 a second call will follow.
With the help of the EU, selected startups will not only get three to six months of acceleration but also up to 30,000 euros in seed capital. Moreover, the most promising projects have the chance to receive up to 250,000 euros follow up investment. CEED Tech aims to support businesses and accelerate their launch. Czech StartupYard, Hungarian Digital Factory, Slovakian The Spot, Estonian Startup Wise Guys and Open Coffee Club in Lithuania are part of the Tech accelerator group that counts almost 100 companies to their portfolio.
Polish startup Zortrax will offer 3D printers on their website, starting in October. The young company works together with Krakow-based 3D printing organisation Materialination that will not only function as an outlet for their products but will also provide possibilities for training and learning to handle the printing device.
