General notes on usage

  • Recommended browser: Firefox. Chrome exhibits a strange bug that modifies the formatting of the content.
  • User proper formatting for section titles or headings.
  • Always insert blocks (text, filter, image) into an empty paragraph.
  • Pay attention to blank paragraphs.
  • When you don’t get the formatting you want, use the “rubber gum” button in the toolbar to clear all formatting (and styles), and start again.
  • Refer to this article’s source. It demonstrates everything it describes. Go into its “edit mode” to view how it is created.
  • Whenever you get stuck ask Marius or Cezar for help.

Definition is a filter (see Filters help section for details on how to add filters).

How to

Media

Cover image

The maximum size that will be shown is 1000px x 336px. If it’s narrower, it will be centered in its area. If it’s wider, it will be cut off.

It will appear in archive cards, content blocks and at the top of the article main page.

How to

  1. Add the image and its details to the Main Image field (help);

Single image

Single images have 2 variants, both of them with an automatic height:

  1. Article Content Image: the image will be displayed with a maximum width of 292px at first and with an expand button (+) overlayed on top of it. The article text will flow next to the image on the right by default, or on the left if you choose the Align Right style (help).
  2. Full Width: the image will be displayed full width at 1000px width.

How to

  1. Create a blank new paragraph where you want the image to appear;
  2. Add the image and its details to the Image Gallery field (help);
  3. Select the image variant you need in the Insert area next to the image;
  4. Press the [Insert] button.

Carousel

The slideshow filter wil rotate between images and will display a next button and a previous button.

The size of the images is 638px x 358px (roughly a 16:9 aspect).

It is recommended that you manually crop the images to get the best effect.

How to

  • Name: slideshow;
  • Option: ids. You can either choose “all” (to display all the images added to the Image Gallery field) or manually add image IDs. The IDs of the images are directly related to the order the images are placed in the media gallery field (i.e. the first image has the ID 1, the second has the ID 2).

Help

Filters

Filters (or shortcodes) are plain text codes surrounded by brackets that you can use to embed pieces of content (e.g. a list of related articles or a Media Base entity). A filter usually looks like this: [filtername option=’value’ secondoption=’secondvalue’] and is composed of 2 main parts:

  1. the name of the filter, that comes immediately after the opening bracket;
  2. the list of options at the editor’s disposal writted in the form of optionname=’value’. The available options are separated by spaces.

To get an idea of the filters at your disposal you can look at the list that comes right after the WYSIWYG text editor. Some of the filters will also have buttons available in the toolbar (e.g. the Ads filter).

There are only a few basic rules tofollow to get the best results:

  1. Always use a blank new line (or paragraph) when you insert / write a filter;
  2. Only apply styles (like Align Right) after you have inserted the filter into the editor.

Styles

Use the Styles dropdown to modify the default appearance of a content or media block.

How to:

  1. Select the entire block you want to modify (e.g. the entire paragraph, the entire quote, the image and it’s caption);
  2. Choose the desired style from the Styles select box in the toolbar.

Available styles

  • Align right: Applies to most blocks of content. Effect: the selected block of content (text, image) will be placed on the right side of the content while the content will flow on the block’s left side. 
  • With author:Applies to quotes. Effect: styles the last paragraph differently (font size, color, font style).

Images

Adding an image

  1. In the field where you want to add it, click [Browse] to select the image, then click [Upload] to upload it;
  2. Add the copyright and caption info into the Title field;
  3. Optional but recommended Use the [Crop] button to crop the various sizes the image will appear in.

Anchors

  1. Click the button that literally looks like an anchor;
  2. Add the name of the section.

Use only letters, dashes and underscores (a-z, A-Z, -, _).

Links

  1. Click the button that looks like a link (next to the ordered / numbered list button);
  2. Enter the link URL / address of the page you’re linking to. If you are linking to an internal anchor (that’s on the page you are adding the link on), add only the name of the anchor preceded by the # character (e.g. “#internal-links”);
  3. Optional add attributes like if the link should open in a new tab.
  4. Click the [Insert] button.

Internal links

  1. Select the text of the link;
  2. Click the Linkit button on the toolbar on the far right (looks like a link with a small green circle on it);
  3. Use the autocomplete feature to find the content you need to link to;
  4. Click the title of the article you are linking;
  5. Click “Insert link”

Find an article or entity node ID

  1. Click the Linkit toolbar button;
  2. Use the autocomplete feature to find the media base entry you are looking for;
  3. The ID is shown in the path, next to “node/”. (e.g. for “node/123”, the ID is “123”).

What to do when someone steals your idea?

So, what do you do when someone steals your startup idea? The following text was originally published in July 2013 by Pipedrive’s CEO Timo Rein here.

The short answer is: get back to work and try not to worry about it too much. Swearing also helps, but is not critical.

Last summer we found out that a company in a large country we serve had blatantly copied our ideas about pipeline management software, our UX, design and large parts of our front-end code.

What comes to copying ideas it’s the sincerest form of flattery, as the old saying goes. But the opportunists had also copied our design pixel-for-pixel. Here’s an example of their little “spot the difference” game.

In addition to design they were also using our code. The Easter egg we had planted was fully functional, they hadn’t even bothered removing the Pipedrive logo that appears in some views. And all of this was done by people that initially approached to become a partner, then snatched up our local domain and then fell silent. We felt like we had been burgled.

Lawyer advises: send a “cease and desist” letter, and elevate to lawsuit if necessary

We explained the situation to our lawyer whose advice was the following: “Generally what happens in this situation is that either the company or its counsel sends a “cease and desist” letter to the other company telling them to stop copying look and feel.  Sometimes, these get elevated to lawsuits. (I’m thinking about Zynga – Vostu ).

Sometimes it ends up being a bad public relations problem in the blogs. (I’m thinking about Curebit – 37Signals.) You can’t really stop someone from copying – I think your response is to send a letter, and elevate to lawsuit if necessary.” We got the copycat to make some retreats, and more importantly no real damage was done

We didn’t want to invest too much time into this, so we used a rather pragmatic approach to sending a “cease and desist” message. We got in touch via one of our investors, who is well connected in the country in question. He wrote a public Facebook post, pointing out the visual similarities and lines in their code that proved theft. The case got a few mentions in local blogs (which actually increased our sign-ups – every cloud has a silver lining).

Although the accused denied any copying, they removed said lines of code and stopped our local domain redirect to their service. They also removed the Team section from their site. Looking back, signups from that country have not slowed down, and the only tangible loss is our relevant domain.

What you can do to protect yourself against copycats

  • Get domains and protect your trademark in key markets as early as possible. As a startup you can’t protect yourself against everything because time and money is tight. But make sure you’re covered in key markets.
  • Plant watermarks in your software and/or encrypt it, so if there’s a need to pursue legal action, you can prove theft.
  • If possible, look into patenting key components of your software – this offers more protection than copyright. More on that here.
  • Last but not least – have a clear vision about how you want to change the world and don’t be dependent on any single feature. If your vision is any good, there will be copycats. But if your vision is bigger than a feature (think cutting edge tech, API, partners, support, etc.), copycats won’t be your biggest worry.    

When inventures.eu contacted CEO Timo Rein on this issue, he said that also from today’s point of view, Pipedrive reacted the right way: “Looking back I think we did exactly the right thing – dropped a few coins in the swear jar, took some immediate legal action, but didn’t waste too much time on it. We’ve grown over 4x in that country since then and getting stronger day-by-day. What it eventually comes down to is understanding the problem. If you’ve copied the solution not really knowing why it’s built the way it is, you’re competing on a lower level, if at all.”
