Layer takes the investment world by storm
Securing 1,5 million dollars of seed investment and winning the TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield in San Francisco are a couple of the things that the Slovenian – American startup Layer ticked off in the last few weeks. It seems like quite an eventful period for this six-month-old startup.
They received a total of 1,5 million dollars from MkII Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, CrunchFund, SV Angel, Promus Ventures, Anthem Venture Partners, Data Collective, and Pacific Partners. Moreover, this news was released right after Layer won the TechCrunch Startup Battlefield, a title accompanied by a 50.000-dollar prize.
And the team seems to already have a plan of how to put it to good use. “We’re using the money to enable our mission to make communications better for people around the world,” Allison Rhodes Messner of Layer told inventures.eu. “We plan to grow fast as the opportunity ahead of us is massive.”
Layer is an IT startup that aims to build a communication platform, which can be easily used on any mobile app by simply adding a few lines of codes. The open source code that they offer enables iOS and Android developers to integrate messaging, video and voice calling and even file-sharing into their apps, and thus bypass working for countless months on building a communication stack.
The startup was launched in March 2013 by CEO Tomaž Štolfa, who previously founded vox.io, and executive chairman Ron Palmeri, who also has a few notable companies including MkII Ventures and Prism Skylabs in his portfolio. The team now has 16 members who are all currently based in San Francisco, but they are looking for talent internationally.
While Layer’s business model involves free access to their codes for early adopters, the company plans to offer a pay-as-you-go strategy by charging developers for cloud infrastructure services as they scale up. Currently, the company is working with 50 beta testers who will integrate the Layer codes into their applications and other interested developers can sign up in advance for when the platform is ready to be opened to the world. “We absolutely see a huge market for Layer in CEE,” said Messner.
