10 CEE music startups you won’t get out of your head (even with ESC around the corner!)

Thesedays, musicians and singers from Europe and beyond are competing at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna. While the Austrian capital has made quite some efforts to support tolerance and musicality around the event (we’ve got same-sex traffic light figures and winning songs from the past years are resounding from the cities’ manholes, for example), there are a lot of people out there who made music their life and deal with it on a daily basis. We compiled a list of 10 startups form all over Europe that developed a business on music and may either help your own band get started or simply enhance your daily sound experience.

Austria

You want to make your own music but don’t know how to get started? Re-compose can help you out! The team has developed an intelligent music composition tool and production software called Liquid Notes that supports you in getting that song out of your head and down onto paper.

Wanna be a Rockstar? Viennese Global Rockstar is an online music platform for professional musicians. Unsigned musicians from around the globe can submit their own videos and compete with others for fan votes. The winner can take home a prize of up to 25,000 dollars. You’ve already shot your first video? Then what are you waiting for?

While some see music as the language of love, Moosify took this concept one step further and made it their business model. Based on your preferences and the streaming service Spotify, the Austrian startup developed a tool that suggests places to meet people listening to your favourite bands and artists. So, go out there – new friendships or even a perfect match might be waiting just around the corner.

Bulgaria

While Bulgarian Flipps (formerly iMediaShare, read more here) started off as a video solution that connects videos from your mobile phone to a TV near you, they partnered up with Rhapsody, the owner of Napster, and are now streaming music related videos, interviews and live performances. So, you can watch your music videos on different mobile or static devices, no matter where you are

If you want to learn a new language but are fed up with boring evening classes, Hint or Two could be a service for you. The Sofia-based team supports you in practising your language skills through providing lyrics translations of your favourite songs in your desired language. Moreover, you can choose films, books or series to improve your listening and reading skills.

Czech Republic

You want to find the perfect tune for a perfect moment? Snippit is a music app and helps you to link the soundtrack of your life to special moments. The Prague-based service allows you to make a photo, add music and share it directly on your social media channels.

Hungary

If your favourite bar keeps playing the same music over and over again, it might be ready for Mixgar. The Hungarian team came up with the idea for a jukebox service for bars, hotels or restaurants and provide a music stream for a monthly fee. Moreover, as a guest you can select and vote for songs you want to hear next. Got some ‘Whiskey in the Jar’?

Romania

You want to go for a run – you got your shoes, your clothes, your mp3 player – but damnit! Your high-speed tunes are saved on your mobile phone only! Sounds familiar? Then Style Jukebox is your fit. The service providesa platform for saving music and enables you to access your favourite songs from different devices.

Slovakia

Thapir connects you to a music event near you. Simply type in your city in their mobile app and receive suggestions for concerts, live music, DJ sessions and many more. You’ll never miss a band in your town and can explore new venues when on the road.

Ukraine

You were able to count the audience of your last gig on one hand? Then bring in more people to your next concert with Ukrainian startup GigMngr. The team developed an online platform where musicians can promote their performances, and event managers can easily find the most suitable DJ, rock band or dance group for their area.

15 CEE food and drinks startups for lazy days

Whether you’re busy, lazy, or just unable to boil an egg without burning your flat down, there’s always a reason to order in. From eye-candy cupcakes to strong booze, we’ve put together a mouth-watering list of CEE startups that make fine foods delivered to your couch or your desk without questions asked. Have we missed anyone? Let us know!

Austria

Mjam
Founded in 2008 by Angelo Laub, Mjam is a platform that allows you order food from over 700 restaurants in 51 cities across the country, covering a wide range of cuisine types. The team has also recently developed an app for iOS and Android for hungry people on the go.

Feinkoch
If you feel like cooking a scrumptious meal yourself but are appalled by the tragic emptiness of your fridge, this one is for you. Feinkoch offers to choose a dish from their appetising selection, then gathers all the ingredients and delivers them to you, together with the recipe. In a nutshell, the Vienna-based startup aims to restore the fun of home cooking while sparing you the time – and the chore – of going grocery shopping.

KochAbo
In the same spirit, KochAbo created a food box service, proposed in weekly plans or twice a month. Customers choose between a set of three or five classic or vegetarian recipes, created by its chef, according to the number of guests. Corresponding ingredients and fresh products are then delivered at home, free of charge. The company also proposes a fruit box plan, delivering three or six kilogrammes of fresh fruits at your door.

Bulgaria

BGMENU
BGMENU allows ordering meals from 250 restaurants across the country, from sushi to burritos, available for takeout or home-delivery. This foreigner-friendly platform possesses an interface both in Bulgarian and in English, and many filters to speed up the research process.

Take-a-Cake
Thanks to the online ordering service offered by Take-a-Cake bakery, customers can compose a set of at least six pieces picked amongst sweet cupcakes or savoury muffins, according to the flavours of the day (displayed forthe week to come). Their order is then available for pick-up or home delivery, coming fresh from the bakery on the day chosen. Sadly, only the lucky dwellers of Sofia can enjoy this service for now.

Murzelivo
On a single platform, Murzelivo combines the resources of an online supermarket and a restaurant. It offers a variety of products to deliver within one hour in selected areas of Sofia, from fresh burgers and energy drinks to classic grocery items and household goods.

Croatia

Pauza
This web and mobile app offers an ordering service from a large number of restaurants in Zagreb, as well as user ratings and reviews. Numerous search criteria such as minimum order amount, delivery time, and types of food facilitate the navigation, also proposed in English for voracious foreigners.

Estonia

TurboDeliver
Through multiservice platform TurboDeliver, Tallinn inhabitants can get sushi, pizzas, kebabs from over 30 restaurants delivered to their doorstep from 9am to 11pm. The most romantic of our readers will be delighted to hear that, in addition to food, the website also proposes aflower delivery service across the country.

MyChef
Founded in 2011 by Columbia University grad Eugene Birman, and Tartu University Law School grad Tanel Ader, Mychef.ee is an online platform for individuals and businesses that allows the order and delivery of various types of food – including frozen yogurts and smoothies – from many restaurants initially within Tallinn.

Poland

Pizzaportal
Pizzaportal gathers over 2.500 restaurants across the country to order from, via an online portal and a mobile app. Unlike its name suggests, the service is not limited to pizza but also includes sushi, kebab, pierogi, Chinese food and other local and exotic delicacies.

Slovenia

Flaviar
Here is where serious things start. This British-Slovenian startup offers to responsible adults – and others – the possibility to discover fine spirits and hard-to-find liquors from all around the globe thanks to its subscription service. Every month, members of this tasting club receive a pack containing five sample bottles with three shots each of various alcohols carefully selected by Flaviar curators.

Ehrana
Created by Jernej, Žiga and Borut, students in IT science and electrical engineering, this startup aims to simplify online food ordering within the country by proposing a unique and user-friendly platform. Featuring ratings and user reviews for more transparency, Ehrana also offers special deals.

Slovakia

eDonaska
eDonaska is a one-stop online portal for food and beverage delivery in over 85 cities across the country. Colourful and accessible even to English speakers, the website puts an end to the interminable leaflet-browsing-before-picking-the-phone practice, by offering an extensive variety of food to order with just a click or two.

Ukraine

Zakaz
Zakaz is a platform offering a wine and groceries delivery service in Kiev, Donetsk and Sevastopol from six selected retailers. The offers on the website are all at shelves prices and customers can choose between different types of delivery, getting items at their doorstep at up to 11pm.

Restoris
Launched in Kiev by Yevhenii Vizhul, Restoris gathers hundreds of restaurants to order online from, proposing an extensive assortment of food types. The young startup aims to implement a pyramidal reward programme, in which each customer would get 1% from its order added to its virtual wallet, as well as 1% of the order of friends invited to join.
